What It Is

FSJ & BFD Explained

Germany offers two well-established voluntary service programmes. The FSJ (Freiwilliges Soziales Jahr) — "Voluntary Social Year" — places you in social institutions like hospitals, care homes, kindergartens, or disability services. The BFD (Bundesfreiwilligendienst) — "Federal Volunteer Service" — is broader and open to a wider age range, covering social, cultural, environmental, and community work.

Both usually run for 6 to 18 months (typically a full year). You're not just volunteering for free: you receive monthly pocket money, often help with accommodation and meals, social insurance coverage, and seminar days where you learn and reflect with other volunteers. Most importantly, you finish with an official certificate that's highly respected by German employers and universities.

It's an ideal pathway if you want to experience Germany, improve your German, do something meaningful, and build a foundation before moving on to study or vocational training. Many volunteers use the year to discover their field and secure strong references.

You're Supported Throughout

Volunteering here doesn't mean being on your own. FSJ and BFD volunteers receive monthly pocket money, social insurance (health, pension, and accident cover), and often assistance with accommodation and meals. You also attend paid seminar days. In return for meaningful work, you gain experience, language skills, and an official certificate that opens doors to study and work in Germany.
